Are Lift and Slide Patio Doors Worth It?

Lift and slide patio doors are a great choice for any home. Not only do they possess the space –saving ability that all sliding doors have, but they also provide an effortless operation, ensuring that heavier doors can be manoeuvred with minimal effort. They’re also incredibly airtight, providing better insulation and contributing to better thermal performance. Their lift and slide properties make them more durable, reducing friction against the frames.

Depending on where you buy your sliding patio doors from, lift and slide options provide enhanced security with high quality locks when closed. Our lift and slide patio doors at Vufold come equipped with PAS24 –accredited interlocks, improving security in your home.

Lift and slide external doors are a modern choice, suitable for larger openings where traditional external doors usually wouldn’t work. They are often available in different colours and finishes, enhancing the visual appeal of your home.

How Much Do Lift and Slide Doors Cost?

How much your sliding doors could cost depends on a range of factors, including:

  • Size: the larger the sliding doors you require, the more they will most likely cost. You can choose a preconfigured patio door, or you can build your own.
  • Material of the Frame: options such as aluminium and composite are considered more durable options for lift and slide patio doors, making them the better choice overall, but they can be more expensive. Materials such as uPVC are usually the cheaper option.
  • Glazing: choices such as double glazing, triple glazing and laminated glass can affect the price.
  • Installation: if doors can be installed in a DIY manner, such as our choices at Vufold, they usually work out cheaper, as other manufacturers may charge for installation.
  • Custom/Additional Features: lift and slide patio doors come with standard features, but you can also add extra features such as laminated glass and different handle options, which cost more.

What is the Difference Between Lift and Slide and Inline Sliding Doors?

The main difference between inline sliding doors and lift and slide sliding doors is the way in which they open and close. Whereas lift and slide doors reduce friction by lifting off of their tracks, inline sliding doors simply glide along the track on rollers. The latter’s operation is simpler, but not necessarily smoother.

Both doors provide a tight seal when closed, providing better insulation and energy efficiency. They can both also support larger spaces and frames, and are equally easy to use. However, inline sliding doors may wear more due to being in constant contact with the tracks.

In terms of cost, lift and slide patio doors are generally more expensive than inline sliding doors due to their more complex mechanisms and engineering.

What Lift and Slide Patio Doors Are Available for Me?

Frequently Asked Questions

What Maintenance is Required for a Lift and Slide Door?

To keep your lift and slide patio doors working optimally, they require regular cleaning of the tracks and other moving parts, as well as occasional lubrication of the seals and locks. You should routinely check the doors for damage, especially the locks, in order to keep your home as secure as possible.

What Sizes and Configurations Are Possible with Lift and Slide Doors?

At Vufold, our lift and slide patio doors range from 1.8m x 2.1m to 6m to 2.1m.

How Are Lift and Slide Doors Installed?

Lift and slide doors are professionally installed due to their weight and precision requirements. The process involves preparing the opening, installing a perfectly level frame, and fitting heavy glazed panels onto a lift-and-slide mechanism. The system is then sealed, adjusted, and tested to ensure smooth, easy operation and airtight sealing.

We provide easy-to-follow installation instructions with all of our sliding doors.

How Secure Are Lift and Slide Patio Doors?

Lift and slide patio doors are highly secure when properly specified and installed. They feature multi-point locking systems that engage when the door is lowered into the closed position, making them difficult to force open. The lift mechanism itself also adds a layer of security, as the door can’t be slid without first being raised by the handle.

Many models are compatible with security standards like PAS 24, and can include toughened or laminated safety glass for added protection.
