External bifold doors standard sizes
If you are looking to fit folding doors to the outside of your home, whether it’s to create a set of patio doors or to replace an old door, the first step is to research standard sizes and compare them to measurements you’ve taken from your property. Standard sizes are based on brickwork opening sizes so its important to have these measurements to hand when choosing the doors you need.
This will determine the frame size you will need and allow you to go ahead and order your doors immediately or help you decide whether or not you need custom-made bifold doors.
With a folding door you have the flexibility to choose how many panels you want to fill your space so the standard width measurement depends on the number of panels you opt for. It is worth noting that the standard sizes of bifold doors depend on the material you opt for. Or, if you are replacing an old French door or sliding door with bifold doors, the opening may not be a standard size.
How do you know which size bifold door you need?
Before choosing your bifold doors from Vufold’s extensive collection, you will need to measure the opening, or the area where your bifold doors will be fitted. This is not as difficult as it sounds! Follow these easy steps on how to measure for your new bifold doors to determine the door size you need for your home:
Step 1: Firstly, use a spirit level to measure the corners of the opening, or aperture.
Step 2: Next measure the width and height of the opening in millimetres. You will need to take these measurements from each side, and from the middle of the opening. The measurements you take will need to be exact as a few incorrect millimetres can affect the way your doors fit.
Step 3: Once you have the key measurements, subtract 10mm from the smallest measurement you have. This will be the size of your new bifold doors.
Step 4: Check that you will have enough space to fold doors back once they are installed.
Step 5: Take a look at Vufold’s large selection of standard sized bifold doors. It is important to note that bifold doors have a 10-15mm fitting tolerance so, if your measurements swing outside of the standard sizes by this amount, you may still be able to install a standard size bifold door.
