Selecting the right door handle for your front door can be tricky, mainly because it is hard to know what you are looking for. At face value, the right door handle might just mean the one that looks the most aesthetically pleasing or accentuates the style of your door.

However, there are other factors to consider such as the functionality of the handle, the level of security it provides and the material it’s made from. This may seem like a lot to consider when you’re just looking for a door handle, so we’re going to shed some light on choosing the right handle for your front door.

What should you consider when choosing a front door handle?

Generally speaking, there are not a huge number of options when it comes to front door handles as any doorknob, door handle on a backplate or on a rose will work perfectly well on any external door. There are some practical benefits to each but, ultimately, the choice should be based on security, aesthetic and functionality.

Aesthetics

In terms of aesthetics, you should usually match your door handle with the style of your home and the door. So, if you live in a more modern, new build home, an antique-looking door handle may not work so well.

Functionality

Another point to consider when choosing a door handle is it’s functionality, or how it will be used. Door knobs offer less grip than a handle, but they may fit the style of your home better. The material used is also something to think about as polished brass does not fare as well outside as polished chrome does.

Security

Finally, the security offered by your door handle should also be considered. Additions such as chamfered backplates can allow for extra security to deter any break-ins, so if you are looking to increase the security of your home, understanding how to choose the right door handle can help.

Types of door handle available

There are a number of variations of door handles currently available on the market, but they generally break down into three categories; lever handles, pull handles and doorknobs.

Lever handles

Lever handles are the most widely used door handle for front doors as they offer a balance of security, functionality and aesthetics that work well for most homes. With many styles available, you’re certain to find a lever handle that suits your home’s décor. These types of handles will need to be locked when you leave and enter your home as the door can simply be opened if it’s left unlocked.

Door knobs

Door knobs offer great aesthetics while increasing the difficulty for potential intruders. There is no lever to get in, however, so a key needs to be used every time you enter or exit your home.

Finally, pull handles are generally found indoors or on commercial buildings, as they are very easy to use and do not require the lever to be pulled up or down. However, it offers a narrower range of security options as there is no lever.

Long bar handle

Long bar handles are a fashionable way to provide extra decoration for your door as well as a functional handle which will allow you to push or pull the door open and closed from the outside. However, these door handles do not offer anything in the way of security so you would need to choose a lock or handle and lock to accompany it.

What materials can door handles be made from?

There are countless types of material a door handle can be made from but, usually, it is either aluminium, brass or stainless steel. The option you choose with largely be decided by your current décor and tastes but there are other factors to consider.

  • Aluminium - Aluminium door handles are very lightweight and durable and can be finished with a variety of colours to best suit your home.
  • Brass – this is a more traditional option and offers a decadent look to any door handle. Eventually the handle can turn from a golden colour to green, leaving an occasionally desirable patina. It is usually better to choose a waxed brass handle as it will retain its new look for longer.
  • Stainless steel – this is an incredibly durable, low-maintenance material for door handles that will stay shining for a long time. It can withstand huge amounts of use too which is perfect for the main entry door to your home.

The most secure door handles

Making sure that you have the most secure door handle is quite straightforward, providing you take a few precautionary measures.

Kitemarked

Another certification to look out for is the Kitemark by the British Standards Institution. All door handles featuring this logo will have been rigorously tested to meet industry standards.

Locks

Choosing the right lock can also go a long way towards finding the most secure door handle for you. A standard five lever mortice deadlock offers the bare minimum in terms of security, so will not be the best option in terms of securing your home.

British Standard deadlocks are an improvement and, most home insurers will require this type of lock for your front door. Finally, there are high-security options such as three-point locking systems, which may seem excessive for your needs but it provides exceptional security for the home.
